On August 20, Faith in Action Alabama (FIAAL) clergy leaders met with Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL) staffer Christian Sanford to ask for the senator’s leadership on common sense gun laws, specifically around enhanced background checks and enforcing a ban on assault weapons. Faith in Action Alabama also asked for Sen. Shelby to call for Senate hearings on white identity extremists and white nationalism, and briefed Ms. Sanford on their campaign to secure Birmingham and Mobile’s support on implementing the anti-gun violence street outreach strategy that has reduced gun violence by 66% in Richmond, CA & 40% in Stockton, CA. FIAAL reported that the aide was open to scheduling a meeting to further discuss this matter, including funding issues.
